| As we edge closer to Summer, are we edging closer to another washout for the 4th year in a row? Lets hope not. Discuss the general prospects here for May 2010. | |

| Well it hasn't been a washout here for the last few years. I'm unsure on this summer. I have a feeling it may be like this Spring unsettled at times and some good high pressure taking over for a week or so. Of course higher temperatures will be recorded than the spring. | |

| I think it will turn out like that too Sean. Back to today, Meto going for full on Thunderstorms/Thundery rain here this evening with Thunderstorm symbols. | |

| Months forecast to be issued later, a warm month to come or will it be unsettled and mostly cool? | |

| May Forecast
Headline: Unsettled at time, lack of real warmth
1st to 15th
The first half of the month is expected to be dominated by cool and unsettled weather with winds alternating from the North/North East. Temperatures are expected to be below average throughout the period with a real lack of warmth. During the dryer spells it would probably feel quite pleasant given the time of the year. The blocking to the north is expected to dominate this period so anyone expecting warm, sunny and settled weather will be disappointed. I expect sunshine levels to be below the average during the first half of the period with winds from an easterly direction. Overnight frosts are possible in clear spells with some snow to the mountains in the north.
16th to 31st
The unsettled and cool theme is expected to continue with blocking to the north persisting. There are no indications of the blocking to north going anywhere soon. For this reason I would expect the first half of this period to be similar to the first half of the month, unsettled and cool with temperatures below the average. I don’t expect anything warm and settled till at least the last third of May.
June outlook
I would favour an unsettled and cool start and current times. That’s if we remain stuck in the current pattern.
Overall
I expect a cool and unsettled May overall. Temperatures will be below the average with rainfall slightly above. Winds from the North/East will dominate the month. No real sign of warmth are being shown.
Next update around the 15th

| According to Netweathers Long range outlook, they agree with May being pretty poor but June and July possibly being quite dry with temps nearer average but confidence is low by July. | |

| Possibly turning very warm later next week. Central, Eastern and Southern England could be seeing temperatures upto 22-25c later in the week. I expect it will downgrade slightly but nevertheless a very nice outlook! | |

| England and Wales will befit from the most sunshine too. Scotland and NI could be cloudy at times but on the whole, the next week could be very very decent for May. Shame it comes as soon as my exams arrive! | |

| I do have a feeling it will be disappointingly cloudy at times, we shall see! There's the possibility it won't last though with the high shifting into the mid Atlantic and the NAO trending back negative allowing an unsettled cool northerly flow to develop again | |

| Yes cloud could be annoying at times but the NW will always be more prone to it. A risk indeed it will turn cool again afterwards. Its proving very very hard to shift. I wonder if winter 2010/11 will be a freezer again. | |

| 17th to 23rd
The third week is expected to be a warm one. Temperatures are likely to be above average. The dry weather will also continue with only showers bringing much needed rain. The second half the week is expected to bring the warmest conditions with temperatures from Thursday into the weekend reaching the low twenties. Long sunny intervals can be expected across many areas. There is also the possibility of some heavy showers in one or two areas as well (see our short range forecast nearer the time) Saturday at the moment looks a fantastic day across much of the UK. This is still subject to change though (given the current time range!)
24th to 31st
Unfortunately its downhill from here, the NAO shows signs of going into negative again. High pressure is expected to retrogress towards Greenland. Temperatures will be much cooler than the previous week. It will also be more unsettled. A northerly airstream would bring showers and much cooler temperatures as we head through the period, so something nearer average, or perhaps below. It will also not help with our friend the volcano still puffing out ash (if it’s still erupting by then)
June (start)
I expected a cool and unsettled start to June with Northern Blocking and southerly tracking jet stream.

| If the 12z comes off it will certainly be a shock to the system, widespread ground frosts next week with temps close to 1c-4c. I think its the GFS going over the top however sheltered parts should watch out! Make the most of Tomorrow and Monday. | |

| Monday should be another decent day here. Met office longer range forecasts not as bad as what they was. Now saying mostly warm for us in the South however cool in the North. Unsettled further North but drier here. Not all that bad.
The GFS is over doing the situation i think. Some areas will be close to freezing but not many places i dont think.
In the sun at this time of the year 18c will feel pretty decent!
